Empty Jumps, it says a lot. It shows how much hard work and effort that has gone into planning and building and then eventually riding them.. We do it because we love to ride bikes, and we know what we like to ride. We enjoy the process of making something that will bring some much fun. And fun they are to ride, most of them have been ridden and things are working well!

While it may not look like many changes to Pushbike courses there is a large amount of small changes that are all planned to make the whole place run so smooth and be so much more fun to ride! More options, and a big sender!

Come the week of Feb 25th the jumps will become alive once the hype for Farm Jam subsides into the reality of showtime!

We would be building them if we were here by ourselves, or if we were expecting dozens of riders, thousands of spectator's, hundreds of Cameras, not to mention Helicopter, Airbag, Portaloos, Media, etc etc. Because everyone is coming to witness the Jam happening we are working real hard to get it all cranking...

The Freeride Moto track has had it fair share of minor changes, mostly discreet but all looks like it will flow so well! There is a mean looking new 70-80 foot dirt double running down the fenceline opposite to the ramp that will be FUN!

We have been working on these Jumps since 2004. This here is a completely new setup, where we are aiming to run the 'Southland Times' best trick competition at the end of Farm Jam day, FMX vs MTB vs BMX yeha lookout!

Hey everyone, we are on the telly in all sorts of places, OZ and USA! Although that may be cool, everyone can see the same show without the adverts on youtube. The 20 min vid features heaps of cool helicopter shots and a good story about the Jam and some piss-funny old shots of farmbike jumping and our first 'foampit' made from a trampoline covered in Hay. Haha

Heres a cool time lapse of finishing the kicker for a nice new jump at the Farm, Emerson has been busy while his broken bones heal and took this on his new camera, this jump replaces the other ones that were just a bit tight and crazy. This one is a brilliant finish to the hip line.

Hip line 2012

Hey everyone, weve been busy updated the jump lines at the Farm, not updating the blog. These short vids we shot last week when we had a few guys riding the new jumps on the Farm. The dirt is real good just over 6 weeks from the Annual Farm Jam. How do we know its good? cos we ride all the jumps ourselves! Rider attendence is guaranteed and with the jump improvements it is going to be amazing, we arent far from being able to release a few rumours of International riders attending this year. 25th Feb 2012 you better be at the Farm. Right now we are just about to 'test' the moto track on our Honda CRF450s, braaap.

Snow Farming in July

In July we had about 6 inches of snow fall on our jumps. We didnt get too rad on the jumps because its better to go super fast and do power turns when its deep and you all know that.

This pic is being towed up the hill, with the aid of a Honda-quad-bike-ski- lift and a water-ski-rope-rope-tow.

Not many things are exactly in the middle of two sports, for example, kite-boarding isnt as cool as surfing or parapenting or wakeboarding, BUT this is right in the middle of Wakeboarding and snowboarding. Its exhausting and awesome.

Unit Farm Jam Mag Coverage....

Unit Farm Jam has seen some awesome media coverage since the big day! Latest to hit the shelves in the Newsagents is Dirtrider Downunder, this has been out for a while now, its well spread through NZ covering all things Dirt Bike in NZ and is the Joe Bloggs Motocrosser's bible to what is happening in the NZ scene, so we were Pumped when Simon Makker sent in some rad Photos and wrote an awesome historical wrap up of the Farm Jam. We scored Cover, Contents, 'F-Stop', and the lead in and major article of 5 pages

Australian BMX MAgazine 2020 has again run some cool coverage from Farm Jam, Camilla Stoddart sent in the images for the collage! Go get it its loaded with good content

Red Bulletin!

Unit Farm Jam took a major step this year, when Red Bull arrived this year with their Film / Photo / Journo / Management enteurage. They came, and were blown away by what we had to offer. They teamed up with Unit to provide the best film angles from all directions, and have also given us 8 pages in the current Red Bulletin
Red Bulletin is reasonably new on the scene, but it is the second highest circulation magazine in NZ behind Skywatch, the TV Guide thingy! So yea its huge, it goes out free with the Sunday Newspaper around NZ and is available free or for purchase in many locations! If you cant find a copy and you need one, let us know!
Robert Tigre was the journolist who spent many hours disecting our habits to get to the bottom of it all, its a great read haha! There is also plenty of other interesting things in the Red Bulletin!

We are also anxiously awaiting a copy of the latest 'NZ Life & Leisure' Magazine, a very fine publication that sits upon many expensive coffe tables throught NZee. This is a different demographic to our usual Moto/Pushy Magazine, but L&L have recently spent some time at the Farm and were here during the Jam to do a feature on the 'Frew Machine' haha, looking behind the scenes at what makes it all work.

Unit Farm Jam went off yesterday with amazing weather, riding and organising! Unit and Red Bull were there filming and shooting so expect some amazing images!

There was a massive crowd there to witness all the action, everyone was well behaved and very appreciative of everyone's riding!

Unit Farm Jam - SATURDAY!!!

Things are really heating up for Unit Farm Jam 2011 which is all on for this Saturday, if you aren't coming you are going to miss out on lots of really rad things!
The tracks are looking unreal, things are really in shape for a blinder!

Remember rain day is always kept aside for Sunday, but all things are pointing towards an epic Southland Sunshiny Saturday!

Do not bring Glass, or your Dogs! We have heaps of security running round with some high powered fingers, so keep yourself behaved or get kicked out! Not to mention our friends from the local Police will be there in Uniform, and a couple of you spectators may also be plainclothed policeman!

Hey everyone, heres a quick peep at who will be turning up to ride BMX and MTB at the Farm Jam on 26th Feb this year. This isnt everyone, or all their details, we will try to get more details up here soon about who else is confirmed to ride the Jam.

The jumps are coming along nicely and we all cant wait to see the folowing guys here to do crazy things on our dirt playground. Above is the new left hip, it needs lipped up some more so that u go higher but its running pretty sweet. Its a wicked addition to the bottom of the Hip line, this is followed by an over 90 degree right hip or an interesting transfer line to the left that no-one has yet jumped. Double hips! Its so intense!

We have been super busy working behind the Scenes for Farm Jam 2011 to be held on 26 Feb. We have a Poster and Web Video out hopefully next week, and there we will a whole bunch more info soon, its all looking pretty exciting, especialy the Rider Lists we are working on!

Look at that landing!! She is a piece of art, and we have been working hard on it with a bit of help from McDowell Transport 16 tonne digger and a few hours of raking, digging and compacting with Farm equipment. Thats two posts in a day!, both pretty much the same. Heres to some good riding when its ready to roll.

Cheers to the local lads and Qtown trippers who made it down last weekend to ride and dig.Its very much appreciated and we love ya.

Weve been busy building jumps, and these are some pictures of it.
This first pic is a 5m left hip at the end of the hip line BMX/MTB jumps.This will be followed by a right hip that will be bigger than this one around 6-7m.

In this you can see a step down thats around 6m too which is off-set quite a bit just to annoy or excite. Basically if you cant turn whilst jumping you wont have made it this far through the Hip line to complain about how technical the last part is!!

Its not finished yet but you get the idea anyhow, lots of dirt and lots of height and turning is required to get thru this line.

Mmmmm

Heres Dev who is a helpful helper, good dude who hardly EVER rides dirt but likes playing with it.

Here are 2 new Moto lips that are around 3m tall, on the left 24m and the right 22m and Dev will probably never ride off either of them but still likes playing with it.

Behind Dev is a much improved landing for the two new dirt kickers.Its much wider and perfect as far as we can see, being that it is wide, dirt, smooth and over 20m from the take off.

No need for Dev to be in this one but he is, in front is a wider, better takeoff for the 20-22m dirt jump that rules for whips!

Swede As Moto X racing 2010

Swede As, Winter Moto-X racing returns Sat Aug 14, 2010, for its 4th year!

It is always a great day out slinging dirt, racing is in a cleaned out rolling crop paddock (swedes that have been eaten by sheep). It is also a fun day with the emphasis on Fun and the track usually delivers with a huge amount of dirt forming into berms by the end of the day.

Riders are required to scrutineer their own bike, it must be in good condition, riders must wear helmets, sturdy boots, and recommended Moto-X safety gear. Right of admission is reserved by the property owners and racing organisers.

Cancellation will be made and posted on this site the morning of the 14th.
Rain day will be Sunday 15th.

Classes include :Peewee, Junior, Intermediate, Farmers and Freestylers, Open and maybe more. There will be a seperate peewee track for beginners

Where: Frew Farm Property, Cathcart Road, bottom of Otapiri Gorge. Signposted from Centre Bush turnoff (SH6) and Browns township(SH96), 20 km from Winton, Central Southland.

Registrations open 9.30am
$10 Peewee rider
$20 Junior U18
$30 senior

Late sign up available throughout the day

Spectators welcome, free entry

Food is available to purchase from The Elk House catering truck and has delicious burgers, chips and drinks etc.

Farm Jam 2010 gets famous!

Hey Y'all!!!
Its been a while since there has been any action on this Blog.. Telling the truth, there hasnt been much action! As your probably aware, FJ was a massive success. Because we all left the Farm to run itself over that period we have since been flat out getting it back in line, and generally enjoying the other side of life. Since the Jam though, the media has been all over it, and there is rad photos and stories coming out all over the show! Everything from our local Newspaper through to some of the top industry Mags in the world are getting on board.
Each year Farm Jam media is reaching further, below is a glimpse of what is currently out there, dont cheat and just flick through whats on here, go and BUY the damn Magazines, (like we did) cos if you dont, this stupid Interweb will take over the world, and we know how good a fresh new Mag smells! (better than your seedy keyboard everybody has fingered!)

FJ coverage still to be released, ( or that we have to get our mitt's on yet) are;

2020 BMX Magazine is now out with it's coverage thanks to Dave Coulson,
Revolution Mag must be due out anyday with their story written by the colourful (well his arms anyway) Seb Kemp, images by Camilla Stoddart.
Dirt Magazine, the leading Mountain Bike Mag in the world are running an article out soon, also done by Seb & Camilla.
RacerX and Transworld MX, the 2 biggest Motocross Mags in the World, are running a fresh new Unit double page spread Advert using an image of Miles Holden's of Levi Sherwood from Farm Jam, this is following Unit's release in the mighty US of A

The short FMX highlights Video put out by Unit, and viewable in an earlier post on this Blog currently has nearing 20,000 posts and I have just had word that Allan Hardy is in closing stages of editing out the full half hour show to be run on Fuel TV in Australia, and we will be planning to get it here in NZee also. This will be exciting! Additional footage for this is done by Jason Hancox of Basket Productions, we are currently also in planning stages of an exciting project with Jase so keep an eye out for this in the future.

FreeriderMX issue - This is the worlds leading FMX Magazine, this time round Simon Makker the Ed came over, basically he lets the pictures do the talking, Simon, and Miles Holden captured some epic photos, and Simon had this to say ''The Frew brothers Farm Jam at the bottom of NZ's South Island went absolutely banana's this year. This is one of the raddest events in Australasia, if not the world!'', check it;

As you may or may not know, Farm Jam 2010 kicked some ass. Everyone made it down to the Farm to ride bikes or watch or both. The Unit FMX video that is up here is amazing and here are a couple more vids that have been put up on Youtube for your viewing pleasure.

Luke McCombie who is a super talented bike rider has been off the bike for a good couple of months now, far too long for a young man! Any way heal up soon, but when he was injured he did a whole lot of filming around the lower south, including some at Farm Jam. So here is his vid,I think it super, you make up yer own mind. Dont just say Sick cos I did, ok.

Also, a chap called Mike Topp filmed and put up an edit of the Farm Jam, we know very little about this man, but Cheers and thanks for helping us increase our web viewability....or something.

Yesterday Farm Jam 2010 went down and it was unbelievable. The riding level this year in all the competitions got stepped up 2 more levels in the new and improved dirt jump areas. It was beautiful weather and the comps got done without any major injuries on the comp day.

Karl Bensemann travelled from Brisbane to rip up the Dirt Quarter pipe again. Dane Searls is being flown in by Unit clothing to come and try to top NZs Paul Langlands for the most tech Dirt BMX riders at the Jam.

This is where itll go down on saturday, technical Dirt Jumps of all shapes and sizes.

Heres Kelly McGazza, quite an unreal rider to watch. He will be going hard no doubt.

We just wanted to flow a wee tease out there for how we are progressing with our rider list...
Sorry we havent been updating this every day but we are fairly busy doing the real stuff. Will be getting back on soon though...

Levi SHerwood, now ahousehold name, close to around the world, Levi hails from Palmeston North, and he stands as the youngest rider to win a Red Bull X fighters event, and now is 1 of a select 6 who are iunvited for this years series around the world. Levi is back in NZ recoering from Injury, but is back on the Bike, and coming to Farm Jam to have a play! Excited much?

This years Southern Freeriders Farm Jam is taking place on Sat March 6th on the Frew farm in Southland, NZ. We are 6 weeks away so get excited

Hard work has gone into this years jam and its paying off with the new riding terrain attracting a lot of riders from NZ and overseas to the Jam. We currently have confirmed 4 AUS professional FMX riders, and NZ,s best BMX dirt riders with the very good chance of some professional BMX riders also coming from Aus to show off their amazing bike riding abilities.

We have an awesome sponsors list which is helping us to be able to give prize money to the top athletes in BMX dirt, MTB dirt, Moto Freeride and racing, and Pitbike racing.

We have improved the jumps and the spectator views, as well as the sound system and days timetable are all simplified and improved on from previous Jams. All this means it is going to be an amazing day out for riders and spectators alike.

A new addition to Farm Jam is the introduction of a Race around the FMX course, 8 riders will battle in a head to head format race. Aiming to be 1-2 lap races, featuring some of the best South Island racers and perhaps an import or two!

There are many photos here of the courses and a sneak peek at some of the riding you could expect to see at the Jam, there are some amazing invited athletes participating this year and it will not be something u will want to miss.

This year defending FMX champ Steve Sommerfield will be back this way to defend his title but with Joe Sheppard(AUS), Rhys Hillier(AUS), Liston Borrie, , Dan Frew, Blake Oconnor, Trent Garton, and Callum Shaw all confirmed riders plus more this will be a tough battle. There is plenty more rippers on the unconfirmed list, so keep your eye out for updates!

Full day entry prices will be $20 adults, $10 kids 5-16, Under 5 free, and a Family pass around $40-$50(2+3)

Saturday just been was time for our building crew to christen the new pushbike trails, fair to say there was plenty of 'whoops' and smiles all round.. There would have been more photos, and from different angles, but for everytime I had camera in hand, I was missing out on jumping! theyre fun, bring on more sessions, the place is going to deliver! The whole top section is runnning sweet, with needed on the bottom section, and last years big line, so plenty more to be done yet... The Moto Track was mostly christened on Sunday, things there arent fully finished either, but working reeeeal well, and exciting times, Farm Jam this year is gunna go off!!!

Gore High Pushbike demo

On Friday night Southern Freeriders run a pushbike demo for the Gore high school, alongside their Fireworks extravaganza!!!

We used a Waikaka Transport Truck to run off for our speed, through to theReaper Pitbikes Ramp, then into our Quarter, a good simple setup.

Heres a first peek at the sponsors and new lines for the Farm Jam 2010.We are stoked to announce pre-existing sponsors and new ones to the Farm Jam event.

We currently have Unit presenting the Moto X freeride/ FMX.

Gravity MTB components are sponsoring the MTB.

And a new addition is Pro-Tec helmets who have picked up the BMX sponsorship.

We are currently looking for a major sponsor which is going thru the process now and we should be able to bring out a poster pretty soon.

Also we have a nice site map drawn up to show peeps what the setup is like down on the Farm.

We just spent a large amount of time on McDowell Transport 16 tonne digger, and also just spent labour weekend on Greenfingers Landscaping 5 tonne digger which is very generously sponsored to the Farm by Simon and Davie Hunt from Queenstown.

So, all the jumps, moto and pushy are looking siiiiiiiickkkk!!!! We will be digging there for the next 2 weekends to polish em up good and make sure they are good to ride!!The photos here of the jumps are 2 lines for the MTB/BMX. The moto ones have had a real good freshen up too so get excited!

The crew from Summer of Shred have posted up their Webvideo from their NZ tour in March. They were here for a Month, and at the Farm for 3 or 4 days and had a blast, as the Vid suggests..

Moto FMX Landing looking good

Blake Oconnor and Bosse Mikkelson came out on Saturday Afternoon to help me do some work on the Track then at the end I tidied up the run in so the lads could ride the FMX setup in the Track, the landing used to be 2 different ones side by side but now its all one big landing so ya can transfer all over the show, the Dirt hit on the left of the Ramp is 75 foot too.. There is plenty more work to do to get the rest of the track runnning as you can see...

Normally we dont let motos ride the pushbike lines but 11th hour berm hits on the AG200 are condoned and even encouraged. Look at the color of the dirt, bit of rain and its on for shaping up the new stuff.!!

The boys had the local contractor McDowell transport drop off a 16 tonne digger on the farm last friday and we quickly got to work making a huge mess! The moto jump track got some love with 3 new much needed landings being built and resurfacing widening and building more awesome stuff.

Its a bit hard to see when its dry but almost everything is gonna be bigger and smoother. big shout out to McDowalls Transport for the Digger! We have Greenfingers Landscaping 5 tonner coming soon to do the tidying up!
The push bike stuff we started is just really roughed out at the moment but the plan is to mould the clay into new jumps which are mostly hips and a step down step up and at the end we are hoping to have a 7-9 foot dirt pipe with hips in and out and a channel for gapping, pretty simple but a bit of work to get running, all of us need to get this digging out the way and ride. Very excited because the dirt doesnt have many rocks in it and bring on a few digs and itll shape up pretty quickly.

We will be having some dig days down there, with the old jumps and foampit still running and new stuff shaping up that should keep us busy for october!Thanks everyone who said they are gonna help dig, we will be doin it soon and I am pretty sure yall be stoked on the new stuff, we are spoiled cos we have shit loads of dirt. Bring on summer.

SWEDE AS 09 A BLAST!!!!!

SWEDE AS MOTO-X FUN DAY

'Swede as 09' happened on 5 sept 2009. Every year we hold a fun days Moto X racing on a cleaned off swede paddock on the Frew farm in Otapiri. This year was a great event incorporating good weather, soft dirt, a tight interesting track and some varied styles and groups of riders.

This year we had 72 riders turned out, from 4 wheeler riding 5 year old girls to, Fluffy the super fast, mega tough, dread locked beast who took out most of the open mens Motos. We had 3 classes this year, Junior, Open, and farmers. By the end of the day most people just got into whichever class they felt like entering. We had an incident of some 'not quite so friendly racing'which resulted in a junior rider who was easily fast enough to be in the open having his ankle hurt by a less than carefull open rider. This was dissapointing but it happens on fun days.We like to emphasise the FUN and it was a great day, very casual which is what we are aiming for for our events.

Everyone else was courteous as they could and we are grateful for everyone who came to the event.Thank you also to Cromwell moto club for the start gates and Brendon Gow for bringing them, and for giving fluff someone to battle with!

We barely covered our costs for the time we spent there setting up the course and lunch and organising but it wll be happening again next year for sure. Dan and I got to have at least 3 races each too so that was awesome to leave the bbq and try to not eat roost from a 450.

Hope you can see from the photos it was super fun, everyone should come next time to ride or hang out! Cheers everyone.

I just wanted to point out several stand out Athletes from here in NZee that are taking the world by storm, and at such a prime young age.

Levi Sherwood. FMXer ,17, from Palmerston North. I first rode with Levi at the Original NZ crusty show in 2004, it was my first Major show, and Levi was a seasoned Pro on his CR80. On Sunday he narrowly missed out on winning his 2nd 'Red Bull X Fighters' Title, just being beaten by Nate Adams, and he did win the Mexico Round a couple of months back. At such a ripe young age, already dominating, lookout...

Jossi Wells. Freeskier, 17 from Wanaka, I was at Remarkables Ski Area on Saturday to witness the 'Winter Games' Slopestyle, where Jossi just missed the Win with a 2nd place, ( he just missed his Double Cork 1080 in run 2!) With a World Superpipe title, Silver at Winter X games, and 3 younger bros nipping at his heels, Jossi, or his bros will be a huge force in the Future.

Byron, 16, and Beau-James, 13, were both also competing at Winter Games, and not far behind Jossi, look out world

Courtney Duncan, Motocross Racer, 12 from Palmerston South. Courtney races 85cc Motocross bikes, and not only does she compete against the guys, she kicks their arses! She very recently at the World Junior Champs resulted in 6th overall, inc a 4th in the second moto, yip against the lads.. Word is that her lap times are very close if ot faster than the currently injured NZ's Katherine Prumm, who is the World Womens MX Champ.

Brendan Hartley, 19, Formula 1 Driver, of Palmerston North. Brendan is the first NZer to gain F1 driver status in over 3 decades, currently as a reserve driver for the Red Bull Team. He also got to bring out the F1 car onto the X fighters course pre Levi's Finals run in the UK, and do some skids for the crowd haha yea boy

'Swede As' MX Fun Day September 5th!!!

Yip, sorry about the delay, our 'Winter' Motocross race, 'Swede As' is now sprung up in Spring... Weather and other commitments, have squeezed it to 5th September, (real soon).

Yes, it does clash with a couple of other events up North, but its the best fit we could find in the Calender for this area..

Format is to be very similar to the last coupla times... Casual. Fun. Awesome Track. and an even better Lunch. (We will have lunch for sale, Primo Venison SAusages are a good start!)

The Track is looking good at the moment, set in an eaten off Swede (crop) Paddock, might pay to bring your Armour, there is the odd rock in there, but will be doing best to remove them..

Sign On is to be from 10am, with a quick practice, and racing planned to start at 11am.

There will be classes for Kids, the Fast, and the not so Fast, so come along and have a good time. Any questions phone Dan on 021878758, or evenings 032369078

Getting a little bored with feeding out Hay to the Sheep each day, Dan decided to get a little creative in his feeding Patterns...
What eventuated on day 1 was SF for Southern Freeriders, and on the second day decided to make the ultimate piss take payback to Unit our major sponsors. Needless to say they were stoked to see it, and it now appears here, alongside Levi Sherwood, and all the other Unit Team on Units Web Channels; You Tube, and Vimeo (they're hyperlinks dumass!)

On the Bottom Right with the Red Roof is my House, right behind it are the Pushbike lines, on the far right by the dead Tree is the Moto Track. Theres a whisper there could be a new discipline to the Mountain Bike Compnent of Farm Jam...

'Swede As' Our Winter Motocross has been squeezed for a Free weekend, with it just being Finalised and will be in the First weekend of Sept, keep your eyes heree for updates.

This year, 'Swede As' will be run in the paddock where the Sheep are running out of.

Skifields record equalling turnout

Sunday 19th July saw a record equalling number of skiers and boarders heading for the slopes of the southern most skifield in NZ. Southern Freeriders skifield director of operations, Dan Frew, said no exact numbers had been totalled but it equalled or exceeded the highest number of the fields history and it would be 'somewhere in the single digits'.

Skiers enjoyed the mid july conditions with 2 inches of dry winter snow on top of what base the field already had, making conditions on and off piste superb. The field being the only one in the southern lakes area to record new snow and a 'retro farm style locals only' fancy dress day had resulted in the fantastic turn out.

Someone has finally managed to organise a decent National level, organised Pitbike Race here in NZee... Its a mission well done by the lads at Koarse Motorcycle Club based in Dunedin. Its all taking place at 'Boys Day Out' Christchurch September 5th. Craig and Jason have been working on this event to make it work, so get there and support it!!! Its got every different class, including Japanese, Chinese and even a Ladies class, and it will also feature a Freestyle Jam on Pitties.. Unfortunately I cant make it there this time round but theres bound to be plenty of Battles!!!

Hey All, Summer 2008-09 was for the Southern Freeriders, a huge one... We figured that most of you wont bother reading the story, so we thought we would have a pictorial highlight of our summer just gone. As you will see by the last Photos, the place is under Snow, so things are pretty quiet on the riding front.

We got the Shovels and Machines out in Force in the Spring, the major addition being the huge landing which is now used as both a Moto landing from Ramp, and a Landing for Pushies that use the Hill to run in from. Here Brett rips out a huge Flip

Gore 'EXO' FMX demo. Blake Oconnor, Matt Turipa, Bosse Mikkelson and Callum Shaw performed a 20 minute demo for Southern Freeriders at a Kids Youth Group day out in Gore in December.. We were plauged by wind surrounding the whole event, it was painful, we had everything ready to go, but we couldnt fully unleash the beast! Everyone had a good time, we all rode as much and as well as poss, but hey, Mother Nature is a beast! Edendale Crank Up Day once again was a major part of the Calender, with Southern Freeriders performing a FMX demo for the 5th time running, Blake SSG - Pic Brad Greenslade

AREA9. Waitangi Day in Twizel was supposed to be the site for NZ's newest successfull Music Festival, we it was NZ's Newest, and possibly lived the shortest history, the Organisers had some issues keeping track of how much money the had spent, and how many Tickets they had spent, mmm and it seems they didnt match up too well!
Southern Freeriders run FMX and MTB Box Jump demo's and Pitbike Racing, we killed it, and put on a hell of a show, the organisers very very happy with our shows, we had a good time, up until we found out we were only to get a smidgeon of the money we were owed from our Contract... Along with all the other Performers and many other, we are a bit gutted about it.

Recently we were contacted by a Film Crew wanting to come and visit the Farm antics.. It was the Prestige Dance Group, a bunch of 7 Hip Hop dancers on a 15 week tour of the country, performing and visiting all sorts of random Rural happenings along the way, whilst filming for a forthcoming TV series 'Phunk Nation' which is to Air in October on NZ's Maori Television.. They were filming Ruraly to take a different look at Farm life for the non Farmers out there...

Here is Dan Flipping into the Foampit on his Pushbike with the crew looking on.. One the Front page of Saturdays Newspaper... Awesome. You cant see the Pit, and there is no mention of the pit. For those of you who dont read this, I am claiming it! haha

They wanted to come and have a go at riding bikes.. I figured the safest way to do that considering their experience, was a roll into the pit, they all did pretty well, one dude nailed the Flip. They were the most excited and motivated bunch that have been here, it was funny as!

Alongside Jamie McConachie's Shearing coach 'Chaz' we got them some sheep for them to have a go at Shearing, and Chaz also whipped out a classic Red Mohawk the same as the leader of Prestige...

To wrap it up, Prestige thought they better show the Shearing gang a thing or 2! Talented lads tho...

4 Huge MAGS!! and we are not talking about 20 inch wheels for a falcon, we are talkin about Southern Freeriders all over the biggest sports magazine in NZ and Australia as of the latest issues.

The photos here are a sneak peak but go out and buy these mags, as we do, and support this 2 wheeled movement that we love! Ride the Gorge 09

Well, yea there was a Ride the Gorge 2009... But we might not have told you about it sorry...

Ride the Gorge is the name for our Motorbike Trail Ride, held around 'The Farm', in the Gorge. Now we are the first to admit we are not primarily known as trail riders, we specialise in 'crazy' and 'mad' frestyle sports... True, but theres nothing like getting out on the Moto with your buddies and riding some wicked natural terrain, all day. Its what we were brought up doing. Brett and I used to have matching XR200's and we would try all day to out-do each other up hill climbs and through muckholes, and these inhibitions havent changed, aye Mum? Just sometimes now the challenges are more based on trajectory...

Ride the Gorge 09 was held as a very lo-key day with invited friends of Southern Freeriders being allowed to ride the trails we had laid out around the farm. We wanted to run this year as a tester for what is required to make it work successfully, we had a blast with lots of smiles and stories from the day with some very challenging spots and wicked flowing trails.

It was run solely on the Farm this year, but we are certainly looking at running the event publicly next year, and we will maybe talk nicely to our Neighbours to see if they mind if we stretch our boundarys, then we wil be covering a serious amount of cool terrain.

Brett showed his catering skills once again with a fine array of homecooking that made it dam hard to get out riding again after chowing down. Fluff and Morgs were pretty happy about it!

Huge news for the New Zealand and world news on the FMX front is the winning of the first round of Red Bull X fighters in Mexico by NZ's own Levi Sherwood, who at 17 is the youngest ever winner!!! In his first major international competition he put NZ and Unit on the Map!

Here he is in a pic I took at Crusty Demons in Invercargill recently. He is on the right with huge extension on his Indy, showing why he is gettin known as the rubber man! On the left is Mike Mason, of USA

X fighters is the leading World tour for FMX competition and Levi upset many of the worlds elite to take victory, he certainly has come a long way, but has always been on the radar for bigger things, I first rode with him when he was 12, I think I was 24 at the time haha as long as he remembers that I used to be better then him! Little punk!

Levi also popped into the Farm when he was down for the Crusty tour, and had a wee spin round our Moto Track, was good to ride with him again thats for sure!! In my pic below, hes hipping out a nice Double Grab on the 85 foot dirt hit

Riders Jam 09, photos and results

Southern Freeriders in assn with Gravity components, held 'Riders Jam 09' last weekend on March 14. The deal was, we would invite all the MTB riders back to the farm that were there for the Farm Jam 08 but were unable to ride the big jumps because of the wind. We had a lot of prizes and cash to give away courtesy of Gravity components, Unit clothing, Spoke Magazine and we had a Lamb to BBQ donated by Adiridas.

The riding was awesome, the Lamb delicious and after waiting all saturday for the jumps to dry the decision was made to run the comp on sunday and the dirt was perfect.We had a great time in the meantime riding the small jumps and the Moto kickers in the paddock up the hill. Thanks to everyone involved and we intend to do this type of Jam a lot more if it continues to be this much fun! We had a lot of riders turned up incl 4 travelling US riders and one from Austria, Dunedin Crew, Phil from ChCh.Basically everyone went home with prizes which was our intention.

The judging was overlooked by Tom Hey (legend) and was put to a riders vote to determine who was to win the catergories of the comp.

The catergories and winners were:

Best Run: Andrew Taylor (US), Tailwhip, No Can, Tuck, Superman, Twhip on Qpipe.

Best Trick: Niki Leitner(AUT), Super stretched superman seat grab

Best Kiwi#1: Karl Bensemann, Big boost, big tucks and a big flip

Best Kiwi#2: Kelly McGarry, Linked together 360s and Backflips and No Cans

Best Kiwi#3: Brett Frew, Supermans, No cans, 1 ft Euro to Table
Wildcard: Phil McLean, Clean Tailwhips and corked flips on the Table line(hes a rippa)

Qpipe Air: 1st Equal, Brett Frew and Karl Bensemann, 6-7 feet out

Hi There...

2009 is passing through quickly... Its been a busy Summer for Southern Freeriders.. If you had been keeping your eye on the blog here, you wouldn't think so because there ain't any news on here! But in all honesty, things have been quite full on with heaps of different events and happenings and work commitments ( being Farmers... )

We have done a few things.. Now the event schedule is in the 'down low' until March 14th, when we are having our Mountain Bike Jam We are yet to put up any decent photos from Farm Jam. Here's a couple to make you want to see the bangers! These pics c/o Chris Hogan

Matt Cole from Oz stayed on after Farm Jam for some riding, up till the day before he left... when he did the fateful, 'slightly short - slightly whipped' hi side to Broken Tib & Fib ouch... heal up Magic, below is a mean pic he took of me turning it down off the Ramp.

Whip train... Now I'm jealous I wasn't out there...AREA9 was a Music Festival amongst the Southern Alps, in Ohau, we did several FMX shows, Mountain Bike Displays, and Pitbike racing.. It was a wicked event we we stoked to be a part of, and we filled in as many slots between NZ's finest Musical Artists! We took our finest crew of Southern Freeriders along, as well as Nick Franklin who took time out of the Crusty tour to come ride for us, it was all time, and everyone ripped it up! More soon..

A.R.E.A.9 was held at Waitangi weekend near Twizel in the middle of a paddock. Dan organised the Biking activities which included MTB, Pitbikes and FMX. It was a great weekend with 30 bands and good weather although a little windy at times, a lot of fun had and a little bit of Hippying was done including showering optional. Happy New Year Everyone!

Well The Rockstar Energy Drink Farm jam has done its thing for 2008. It was held as the first officially open to the Public event for Southern Freeriders, at the Farm. It was hugely successful day on 28th December on all accounts apart from Mother Nature, who didn't let us unleash what we had ready to roll. Ground conditions were really good following a nice overnight rain on the 26th, but the wind began to come through on the 27th, and it hasn't ceased for a minute as yet. Wind isn't usually too much of a problem here as it comes and goes, but this time it was consistently....windy.

We had an estimated 1500 people through the farm over the duration of the 28th, not too bad considering we are based in a decent sized fantastic province called Southland, with only 100'000 residents.
The show that was open to to the public was very limited as the winds that came through, threw a serious risk to rider safety out there. One spectator was heard to say that we looked like a pack of Jack Russell's locked in cage not able to get out.. (Rockstar Energy Drink Fueled ones!!!) No one was too disappointed as we still rode to the best we could, the BMX and Hardtails had good sessions on the small Tables, the Pitbikes carried on as usual and had their race, and Moto's still got ridden, but was limited.

There will still be plenty of coverage doe, as there was several Photo Video sessions before and after the public sessions, so be sure to keep checking in for coverage!

There's a whole bunch of Photos and Footage being collected up as we speak to post up here, so stay tuned, and we will get some thing on here asap!

New Zealand's TV3 was on site and filming for the News section, and rumour is we will be on the News, and Sports tonight, this week...

With all the bigger Mountain Bike section being unrideable due to the winds throughout the whole weekend, a general consensus was that there was no full on Gravity MTB Jam, so decision was made to re-run the actual jam at a later date - keep your eye on the Blog for updates.
There was plenty of Hardtail action on the Tables though, with lots of cool things going on.

The Unit Freeride Motocross Section was very limited during the open public day due to a seriously strong cross wind. Several of the us, went out and rode the track because its still fun, but there wasn't any big whips or tricks happening. Just a whole lot of fun riding the track, but it was to windy to be getting too crazy with the whips, and there basically no tricks. This was a huge bummer as we had plenty of skilled lads around all ready to roll out the big guns!

The plan was to be running the comp on 5 minute runs on the 28th, but due to the wind throughout the whole few days, the decision was made to judge it on the whole weekends riding. We all had a good go over the few days, but still even today, the wind has not let up.This is how the results ended up...

There was also a bunch of other riders around throughout the weekend having a good session, loving the course, and styling it up for the race crew was Fluff, Brendan Gow and Lachie Columb

The RevolutionNZ BMX Comp run as normal because the jumps weren't too wind affected ( well they were but didn't seem as affected ad the rest of the Courses

The BMX comp was taken down by Kane O’Hagan, followed by Jeremey Gray, and Robbie Brown/Karl Bensemann tied for third.

The Revolution Crew were filming loads during their trip too, so stay tuned for a Vid from them soon...

The Rock Best Trick competition was unfortunately canned due to high winds running through the centre of the area. Lookout for some cool things to happen on this setup in the future, you will see an image below here I took a while back, as you will see there is plenty of potential there, and there was plenty of talk of what 'could' have happened. Look out next year.

Saturday was Christening of the new Southern Freeriders Downramp, that has been constructed to run the "Rock FM Best Trick'...
Its fair to say it worked. I took a bunch of pics, but none do justice comparitive to this gem.
It took one go to get this shot, Brett as you can see, was doing some big lofty flips, and Bosse was, as always styling it up. The timing was on!
You will have to wait to see what else can be unleashed on this beast!!
Come 28th december, this is going to be a showdown for Moto VS Mounty VS BMX, things will get a little interesting!

Dropzone 08

Saturday was the day for Dropzone 08, which was the Park Opening for S.A.S FMX crew in Edendale (Southland). It was the first time S.A.S had opened their gates for people to come and watch, and they held a Comp to try and help the scene along. It was a wicked day out, pretty windy conditions, but cleared enough at times to run the comp.
It was also the first time I had had the chance to see Callum Shaw ride. He the latest ripper to surface from the depths of Southland. He has ridden all his life, but only this year started FMX, and if Dropzone was anything to go by, he has picked up some big tricks real quickly, likes of, deciding mid comp he wanted to try Holy Grabs ( nothing to double seat grab ), and nailed them clean.
Callum then decided to try and huck a couple of flips. He has done them before on Pushbikes but is keen enought to give it a go on 250, click here;http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pU3TWff_8_I to see his attempts from a couple of weeks back, in which he got pretty close, but at Dropzone he couldnt pull it round, mad credit for trying especially straight up to dirt. That with the rest of his run saw him take the comp out.
Bosse Mikkelson was second, Matt Turipa rounding out the top 3. Alan Gibb, Steve from Invercargill, and Dan Spooner also rode hard and put in dam good efforts, Blake Oconnor didnt ride the comp, after having a couple of moments earlier in the day decided to pull pin. Check the pics!

We had to do some ditching on the Farm the other day... thought we better do some landscaping at the same time. I had to pinch myself this evening when I took these photos, looking down at the state of my backyard. Its really not your average Farmyard.

The new landing and site for 'The Rock FM Best Trick'. Natural Embankment. Conveniantly above the mouty line, so then you can one day step up over the Track, then ride off the Mounty drop in ramp

Which, by the way is looking ace after a nice rainfall today. Been Busy?

The big pile of dirt with the 2 lines in is the site thats to be the new landing as planned, as standalone landing for Steel or Wood kickers. Its got a 2 tiered run in, designed so Mountain Bike can run down off the hill I am taking the Photo of here, into the Left hand side where its less of a height, onto the same big wide landing, beside where the motorbikes will land. One landing for all bikes? You can sit on 65km/h on the flats before the ramps without too much effort.. Limits?Its not too easy to see here because its all dark and blended in, The Moto Track is similar to last year, but instead of coming towards the Camera here, you stay on the jumps side of the Creek. If you were to start down the left hand side down the hill it is 2 option stepup back up onto the flat, followed by Ramp/2Dirt Option (dont pay any attention to where that ramp is sitting) into 2 option dirt, through 180 right berm and back down the double to Booter, which now has a bigger option around 80 foot, and the landing is getting fixed. , then left 180, into step down right hand hip (that isnt built yet) to fast step up then into the 180 left berm directly behind the existing berm. Then you will run through 2 mellow doubles then into the 2 step downs. Past the dead Pine Tree on the Hill.

One digging Weekend

The last two days of November saw Frew Farm come alive with the sound of digging and raking and rolling and Dan nearly running them down in the Tractor all day but then each day ended with a mean RIDING session. Cheers to the all the helper!!! yeeeeeeea team effort!

Still nursing my recently fixed wrist I was armed with Camera, again, thats why theres never any photos of me see.

Tom Hey, hey Tom nice addition that roller by the looks of things, you were killing it dude. As usual.. We welcome him back to NZ, Thom has been Canada and States buiding slopestyle courses and riding, and its showing. He did the same here.

Emily Johnson is in Queenstown, over here for a southern hemispehere summer, she can ride a bike thats for sure.
Foster Walder has been at the Farm for every weekend since he has been back, apart from one. I think he likes the place, and his new Pitbike, this time he brought Charlotte fresh from narrowly avaoiding the Bankok Lockdown. Here Foz is riding his Mounty through the lines he has done most of the work! Cheer Foz, dont worry I'll look after your Camera!

Devin is also nearly part of the woodwork here at times, he brought down his road legal compacting machine, prepped some more, then rode. Good dirt rash though dev!

I never took any photos during building this time as there was up 20 odd helpers through day on Saturday and a lot camped over and kept digging for a major of the day. There was a lot done but it all paid in dividends with the outcome. Here is Peter Millar rolling through, invers boys representing.

I would nearly say thats one of the coolest Nacs I have ever seen. If it wasnt for getting to see McGrath at Xgames, it would have been for sure. We even maanaged to get the token girls in there haha thats Prue taking a shot from her angle and charlotte watching on.

Luke McCombie has migrated to Queenstown for a Summer to shred it up, when he wasnt busy building the jumps he was tailwhipping and backflipping the lower tabletop line and was riding well through the big line too.

Southland FMX scene ruling it

Blake Oconnor, Bosse Mikkelson and Matt Turipa are leaading the charge in the huge scene that is widespread in Southland. For a small province there is a whole bunch of talent, and a lot of riding areas.
I took these snaps a couple of weeks ago at a show the lads did fro a fundraiser for the Rugby club in Riversdale, a small settlement in Northern Southland.
This weeekend coming is Dropzone, a new event the S.A.S crew are holding at their base in Edendale, its free entry and should be a good day out watching the lads tear it up on their new park. See the older post here to see the park!
The weekend after a Southern Freeriders show is happening with these 3 rippers at the Gore High School 'St Peters' as part of a Youth Group gathering. We are setting up a ramp in the Rugby field and the lads are doing one show alonside a multitude of other activities for about 1000 kids.

Devin Parker spent 5 days at The Farm moving, shaping, and rolling that beautiful Southland dirt with his rolling machine, aka Suzuki Vitara.

Hes shaped in a couple of cool new options, one of which is done and rides well. With a bit more love this line is coming along well. We are working on bringing in a few new Farm features too, Lookout!

Foster, is really a push biker, but by the look on his dial after I saw him thrashing his new Pitbike ( my old Reaper ) its obvious hes loving twisting throttle too.. Loving getting covered in sheep shit!

Resource Consent?

We are currently seeking Resource consent to run up to six events a year here on The Farm. The main one being the Rockstar Energy Drink Farm Jam and followed up by 5 more low key different events, most of them can be found on the website events page.

That book that i am holding in my hand there is 114 pages of really exciting information about the whole process. Monday morning is Hearing date. I will keep you posted.

Today Devin and I ventured out to Tony Hartleys place near Winton to check out the new 2009 Honda CRF's... Dam, they are looking good. The 450 especially, is sporting a fresh battery-less Fuel INjection system, along with a whole swag of major changes. There was a lot of people there to check out the developments and there wasnt too many dissapointments and smiles all round. Especially when Scam shouts a few beers and BBQ!!

Last weekend saw the generosity of Greenfingers Landscaping donate their machinery to Southern Freeriders for some digging good times... Once again the Frew team set out to perfect the landscape on the Farm, jump styles... Time was solely spent on the Big Mountain Bike line, revamping and sizing up the big line to make it work better, while the line below the track getting all the changes, and lokd dam fun!!

The Pitbike Track from 'Farm Jam' last year has been added to, with a few rolly jumps and berms added into the natural styles track. SHould spice things uo nicely...

Next on the list once we get a decent sized digger here ( should be here but we are waiting.. ) is to make the few mods to the Freeride Moto track, I have some mean lines sussed to make it flow even better.

Also on the list is the new Landing which is to be made suitable for all bikes, mmm think, Moto vs Mounty vs BMX vs Pittie Best Trick. The Rock FM is sponsoring a head to head best trick comp at 'Rockstar Energy Drink Farm Jam 08'!! Yip thats right.

When I was in Canada I shot some snaps of the one and only Kelly McGarry, The latest Revolution Mag fresh out of Aussie has these 2 snaps in there, pumped, i think theyre awesome. One from Crankworks is on the Crankworks rundown in the opening pages, and one is used in their dealer ad.. check it

Mind The Gap 2 has been released.. MTG, NZ's own Motocross DVD made solely by Tim Gould, has followed along the same theme as MTG1, riding, and the lifestyle around it. The lads have taken 'taking the piss' to a new level. With coverage from around our fine Country, and one hell of a Roadie taken through the United States to catch the excitement of AMA and MX des Nations. Its wel worth a watch with a huge cross section of the NZ mx scene

Theyre cranking up towards an opening weekend of 6th December, where theyre planning an Amateur FMX competition, but yea also fair to say there will be a few amateurs scared of the course.. Its looking epic with some nice dirt hits in it as well as a couple of ramps intergrated. Its a tech course and will be epic to ride...

I had a Call from the man himself Kelly 'McGazza' McGarry today, he was chillin in his Hotel room in Vegas because it was too bloody hot to do anything, yet he is about to head out further into the desert tthis weeeknd to compete in RedBull Rampage!!!

McGazza is the only Southern Hemisphere rider invited to the premier event held out in the desert from Vegas. Hes feeling pretty amped about getting out there, he told me he figures that a certain few will absolutely kill it, a certain few will drop of slowly. His aim is to be in the middle there somewhere, a dam good place to be considering the line up and the level of what will happen

Well Yesterday marked the first day of Daylight savings here in NZee, so that means Summer is just around the corner... So yea, we can all stop yawning and get out amongst it! There is now time, after work, to make a difference in this world!!! ( Well to your riding park, or to your riding ability by getting out and riding everyday!!! )

Yes it means we can do more of this.... Its me loving the Summer evening last year,

Spring is well n truly here, as you'll see I threw in a couple of pic of the Farm at the Mo.. Not too much riding going on, just Animals loving the warmer weather ( apart from Saturdays Snow Shower )

You will see the Logging happening in the background, thats the Forest just beside my house... Its being done at the moment, so I got the constant humm of Diggers, Skidders, and Mean ass Chainsaws

Tim Pierce and Zero & Ones

Tim Pierce is Zeros and Ones which is a Production company based out of Wanaka. Being a master of the Still Camera, Tim has more recently Joined the HD Film revolution. He has many credits to his name in both Film and Photo in the Snowboard and Mountain Biking Industry's.

He runs a blog that has to be checked up on nearly every day or you will get left behind on what he is up to. check it out here.

His latest project in development is a Mountain Biking Film, check out the progress here. Ive been talking to Tim about it, and it is going to be huge for the NZ moutnain Bike SCene, and a lot of filming is set to be here at The Frew Farm, and at 'Farm Jam 08'.
